Rosemary Bietendorf, owner of The Gym of Tucson

Owner, trainer, coach.

I didn't set out to open a gym. I set out to help people get stronger.

It started in 2008 as a circuit coach at a women's-only gym in Tucson, learning from a mentor who saw something in me before I fully saw it in myself. She pushed me to get my personal training certification. I did. And from that moment, I couldn't stop.

I trained people at the YMCA. In parks. In their living rooms. Wherever I could show up, I did. One of my boot camp classes became something more than a class. It became a crew. We started training for Spartan Races together, spending weekends in the dirt doing things none of us thought we could do. We finished all three, including the Beast, a half marathon with obstacles. The race ended. The boot camps didn't. Nobody wanted to stop.

I spent years working for gyms that weren't mine, learning what I loved and what I knew I'd do differently. In 2015, I finally got to work for a locally owned gym, the kind I'd always wanted to be part of. The owners were good people who understood my ambition. In 2019, they helped me walk out the door to open The Gym of Tucson.

We built something real from day one. A team of coaches who genuinely believed in the mission: creating a space that was safe, supportive, and non-judgmental, but still pushed people to find out what they were capable of.

Then COVID hit. Two weeks before our one-year anniversary.

We shut down. We pivoted. We used that time to move into the space we're in now, with an outdoor training area, big garage doors, and enough room to finally bring the park boot camp energy indoors. We survived because our community showed up for us the same way we'd shown up for them. I will never take that for granted.

Giving back has always been part of who we are. Every year we host charity events that bring our members together around causes bigger than fitness. It is one of my favorite things we do.

Sixteen years in, this is still the thing that gets me out of bed every morning: watching people surprise themselves. Watching someone lift more than they thought possible. Watching a nervous first-timer walk in and leave feeling like they belong somewhere.

That was always the goal. Not the biggest gym. Not the flashiest. Just the one where people actually feel seen and leave stronger than when they walked in.

We built that. Together.

In their own words.

Real people. Real results. This is why we show up every day.

I've absolutely loved my experience at The Gym of Tucson. When I first walked in, I honestly expected an intimidating environment full of super-buff guys throwing heavy weights around, yelling, and taking things way too seriously. Within my very first class, I realized how wrong I was.

From day one, I was welcomed warmly and treated with genuine respect for my own pace, goals, and fitness journey. Every coach is knowledgeable, kind, and incredibly accommodating. Anytime I've had an injury, soreness, or limitation, they've always been able to modify exercises in a way that keeps me moving safely while still helping me get stronger.

Since joining, I've lost around 20 pounds — but more importantly, I've done it in a healthy, sustainable way that actually feels maintainable long-term. This hasn't been about crash diets or temporary trends. It's been about building habits and strength that I know will stick.

The community here is something special. They genuinely care about people and give back in meaningful ways. It feels like a second home — a place that's not only an investment in my health and future, but one that helps me show up better and stronger for my family and the people I love.

I can't recommend this gym enough. Rosemary, the owner, is absolutely amazing, and every single coach has been incredible — supportive, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in everyone's progress.

Since joining, I've definitely gained muscle, lost weight, and feel stronger than I have in a long time.

What really sets this gym apart, though, is the community. I've never felt more welcomed or more like I'm truly part of something. It's such an encouraging environment, no matter where you're at in your fitness journey.

There's a place for everyone here, and the support, coaching, and atmosphere are second to none.

Since joining in January 2022, I've lost weight, gained muscle, and discovered a passion for powerlifting. I have even competed in the sport at the local level — something I never expected as a fiercely dedicated non-athlete.

My biggest transformation, however, has been mental. I discovered this gym when I was at a really low point in my life, and to this day I am so thankful for that Google search result. Coach Rose is a force for good, and she believes in me, especially when I doubt myself.

I owe so much of my physical and mental transformation to The Gym of Tucson and its people.

The Gym of Tucson isn't just a gym — it's a family. From the very first class I took, I was welcomed with open arms. One of the things I love most is that it's a female-owned gym. It has so much more soul and personality than any big-chain global gym. You can feel the love and intention behind everything.

The Gym of Tucson became a community, a sanctuary, and one of the most meaningful parts of my time in Tucson. If you're lucky enough to live nearby, don't take this place for granted. Go, show up, and let this gym become part of your story too.

I've been training with Rose for over 6 years now. She is the best trainer for me — tailors each workout and really knows her stuff. The atmosphere is wonderful, the equipment is phenomenal, and the classes are excellent.

The community she has created is like no other. Welcoming and supportive. I recommend The Gym of Tucson. Definitely a place to check out and try. You will then agree with me.

I changed my lifestyle and decreased my mortality rate significantly. It's about daily growth, community, and all around wellness. They're just good at getting people healthy and keeping them healthy. PERIOD.

I competed in powerlifting at the local level — something I never expected as a fiercely dedicated non-athlete. Every coach is skilled, genuinely enjoys teaching, and is invested in the members.
